English

At Apollo Parkways Primary School, English is taught through daily, structured lessons in Reading and Viewing, Writing, and Speaking and Listening.

In Prep and Grade 1, students learn to read through a combination of Little Learners Love Literacy and Heggerty Phonemic Awareness – both explicit, evidence-informed, and multi-sensory approaches to early literacy. These programs focus on building strong phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge, giving children the essential skills they need to read, spell, and write with confidence. Lessons are engaging and fun, and teachers are thrilled with the outcomes students are achieving.

From Grade 2 to Grade 6, students move into Spelling Success in Action, a structured and sequential approach to spelling that supports confident, capable writers. Across all year levels, students also benefit from The Syntax Project, which develops sentence structure, grammar knowledge, and writing fluency.

These teaching approaches are grounded in the science of reading and supported by ongoing professional learning for our staff. This ensures consistency, continuity, and excellence in how literacy is taught from Prep through to Grade 6.

We are proud of our commitment to explicit, evidence-informed, and engaging teaching, and our data continues to reflect the positive impact these programs are having on student learning.
