Mathematics

At Apollo Parkways Primary School, we are committed to a consistent whole-school approach to the teaching of mathematics, ensuring every student develops deep and lasting mathematical understanding.

We follow the Victorian Curriculum V2, focusing on the six interrelated strands

  • Number

  • Algebra

  • Measurement

  • Space

  • Statistics

  • Probability

Our approach emphasises real-life connections, helping students see the purpose and relevance of mathematics in the world around them. Students use a wide range of hands-on materials to explore, experiment, and represent their thinking in meaningful ways.

We incorporate digital technologies to support engagement, visualise abstract concepts, and provide access to rich mathematical experiences. This empowers students to interact with maths in dynamic and innovative ways.

“Mathematics provides opportunities for students to apply their mathematical knowledge creatively and efficiently, sharpen their sense of discovery and develop an appreciation of structure. It enables teachers to help students to become self-motivated, confident learners through practice, inquiry and active participation in relevant and challenging experiences.”

Celebrating Maths: Maths Week

To foster a love of mathematics, we celebrate learning through our annual Maths Week. This includes:

  • ‘Fun with Maths’ incursion – a hands-on, high-energy maths experience.

  • Maths Dress-Up Day – students dress up in a year-level maths theme and participate in collaborative problem-solving activities.

These events promote collaboration, creative thinking, and most importantly, enjoyment of mathematics across the whole school community.

Our goal is to empower every student to become a confident, curious, and capable mathematical thinker, equipped to apply their skills in both school and life beyond the classroom.
